NOTES

There seems to be some confusion with some family trees on Ancestry.com with a James W. Smith inOregon in 1900 and 1910 census and

some have Joel Smith's second wife as mother of JamesD., but the 1860 census has him and his twin brother Daniel listed at 3 months old and
their mother as Joel's first wife Caroline. Joel's second wife's name was Elizabeth A. Broadwell and the Oregon James W. Smith's
mother's name was also Elizabeth which has apparently lead some to think that the two James are the same person. They are not. The
James in Oregon was James Woodfield Smith who was born in Benton County, Oregon Territory and who's parents were John C.and
Elizabeth A. (Miller) Smith. The Oregon James W.Smith died March 25, 1945 in Cottage Grove, Lane County, Oregon. This can be
checked out on the "Early Oregonian Search" website HERE. I had some difficulty tracing this James Smith after 1880 but was finally able to
locate him in 1900 til his death in 1920 in Santa Barbara County, California.
